What is RSV and who is at risk?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that infects the lungs and respiratory system. In healthy adults, it typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, symptoms can be more severe, leading to more serious complications in infants, toddlers and older adults. In this population, RSV is the leading cause of pneumonia and inflammation of the lungs, called bronchiolitis.

RSV symptoms

RSV symptoms in kids and adults are similar to other respiratory viruses. These include:

  • Cough
  • Difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Trouble breathing
  • Wheezing

Many of these symptoms can overlap with other respiratory viruses. Therefore, if you suspect RSV, it is best to seek medical care.
